The Dimensions Of Well-being
In a talk presented by Andrew Marty of SACS Consulting one of the key poin
ts raised were the issue of workplace morale. In his presentation Andrew presents the four pillars of workplace wellbeing as;
- Individual Morale
- Workplace Morale
- Individual Distress
- Workplace Distress
| Morale, Marty points out, is the single best predictor of internal and external
organistation outcomes backed by a strong link of research which also supports the
claim that the higher the morale the greater the outcome. |
Which Is Worse, High Distress or Low Morale?
Research carried out has found that workplaces who rate low in the "wellbeing" area do so more because of low levels of morale than high levels of distress. Andrew went on further to talk about successful workplaces that are constantly under high levels of distress yet manage to retain high quality employees and achieve business objectives because the morale between the employees was high even though the distress was also high. Marty describes a workplace of low distress and high morale as "utopia" and conversely a high distress and low morale workplace as a "time-bomb". Most of us at one point or another will have experienced both ends of this spectrum to a varying degree.
